FARGO – The certainty that a new NDHSAA Class A softball state champion would be crowned in 2018 was known on Thursday, but which team would take the top spot wasn’t determined until Saturday, June 2 at Mickelson Field in Fargo.

Minot – the No. 4 seed from the West Region – defeated Dickinson 4-2 in the state title game. The Magicians were 0-4 in the previous meeting with the Midgets this season.

West Fargo had won the previous nine NDHSAA-sponsored softball state championships – the last six coming in the Class A division. There was one division of high school softball in North Dakota from 2009-2011 with a Class B division being added in 2012. The Packers lost in the quarterfinals 8-4 to Bismarck Century on Thursday, May 31.

Minot was making its first appearance in a softball state championship game. The Magicians made it count scoring all four of their runs in the third inning.

Dickinson appeared in a Class A softball state championship game in 2015 and 2016 losing both contests to West Fargo.
