GRAND FORKS – Entering the final tournament of her prep girls golf career, Anna Huettl still had a couple big items she’d yet to accomplish and with only two days left to work with it was going to take her best.

Huettl answered the bell by delivering one of her best individual performances of the season during the 2023 NDHSAA Class A Girls Golf State Tournament played October 2-3 at the Grand Forks Country Club.

When Huettl walked off Hole 18 on Tuesday, October 3, she became Mandan’s first individual Class A girls golf medalist in school history and had helped Mandan win its first team state championship since 1966.

Huettl finished the two-day tournament shooting a 3-under 141. In Tuesday’s round she carded a 2-under 70 with birdies on Hole 6, Hole 10, Hole 17 and Hole 18. Huettl entered Day 2 with a five-shot lead and her dominant play in the final round left no openings for the rest of the field to catch up to her. She won the tournament by nine strokes as Lexi Bartley (2021 NDHSAA Class A medalist) of Fargo Davies and Zoe Keene of West Fargo Sheyenne finished tied for runner up honors with two-day totals of 150.

Huettl finished fourth in 2020, fifth in 2021 and tied for fourth in 2022. In 2023 as the individual state medalist, Huettl had company from her own team in the All-State finishers final leaderboard. Mandan eighth grader Isabella Hale finished tied for 7th place and senior Ruby Heydt finished 10th.

Mandan finished the tournament with a team total of 629 – one stroke better than runner up Grand Forks Red River (630).
