GRAND FORKS – Fargo South defeated Grand Forks Central 3-2 in the 2017 North Dakota High School Activities Association Boys Tennis Team Dual State Championship match on Thursday, October 12 at Choice Health & Fitness.

The victory earned the Bruins their second team dual title in three seasons.

Individual singles and doubles state tournaments begin at 9 a.m. Friday, October 13.

South paved its way to the finals with a 3-2 decision over Minot in the quarterfinals followed by a 3-2 win over defending team dual champion Grand Forks Red River in the semifinals.

Leading the way for the Bruins was senior captain Davis Lawley who won his No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0.

“Having to put on my jersey and play for the last time with these guys was heartwarming,” Lawley said following the team dual title match. “I wouldn’t have wanted to end it with another group of guys. It is awesome.”

The championship match came down to No. 2 doubles. Gridlocked at 2-2 it was up to the Bruins combo of Kain Carlson and Austin Zurn. Carlson and Zurn rallied to win their match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

“They were up and down,” Fargo South head coach Vic Youngs said of Carlson and Zurn. “It is a rollercoaster, but when you get them believing and erasing doubt good things happen. That worked for them in the second set.”

South's other win in the team dual title match was Geoffrey Youngs and Max Olson picking up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot.
