VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The 2018 North Dakota High School Activities Association Fall Activities season has come to a close. It was one packed full with memorable moments. Below is a recap of some highlights.

DAKOTA BOWL XXVI: Action packed day at FARGODOME

The QRF Formula has been used for two years determine host teams for 9-man football playoff games when like-seeded teams meet and also for seeding the top four region winners in the Division A state football playoffs.

This fall, if you apply the formula to all four NDHSAA football divisions following the final week week of the regular season - the top two teams based off the QRF Formula rankings met in the Dakota Bowl.

All four games were entertaining. Three out of the four championship games were decided by seven points or less.

Thompson defeated New Salem/Glen Ullin 42-28 in 9-man.

Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich defeated Hillsboro/Central Valley 20-18 in Division A.

Fargo Shanley defeated Bismarck St. Mary’s 28-21 in Division AA.

Bismarck High defeated Bismarck Century 21-16 in Division AAA.

VOLLEYBALL: Bismarck Century makes history with Four-Peat, Thompson wins B title

The Bismarck Century Patriots won their fourth consecutive state championship defeating Mandan 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18) in the title match Saturday, November 18 at the Minot State Dome.

A year ago, Century and LaMoure-Litchville/Marion joined Fargo North (1994-96) as the only programs to three-peat in state history.

Junior Lauren Ware led the Patriots with 27 kills in the championship match. Century sophomore outside hitter Julia Fitterer added 13 kills and 19 digs for Century.

In Class B, Thompson won a five set thriller against Oakes. The Tommies edged the Tornadoes 25-20, 23-25, 13-25, 25-16, 15-13 during the championship match of the NDHSAA Class B Volleyball State Tournament on Saturday, November 17 at the Minot State Dome. Macy Jordheim let the Tommies with 22 kills.

GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING: Bismarck Century wins team title, Patriots break records

Bismarck Century won its fourth straight NDHSAA girls swimming and diving state championship this fall. The Patriots scored 400 team points during the state meet held Saturday, November 10 at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo. Century took first in seven of the 12 events on the final day of the state meet.

Sophomore Lexi Duchsherer won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events and was a member of the Patriots 200 Freestyle and Medley relay teams that took first place.

Duchsherer broke a state record in the 50 freestyle turning in a time of 23.31 seconds. The previous record was held by Courtney Funk of Minot (23.36 seconds) set in 2011.

The Century 200 Freestyle Relay team comprised of Duchsherer, Sarah Dorrheim, Paige Keller, Carly Palmer (pictured below) also broke a state record during the finals. The team’s time was 1:37.38 breaking the previous record held by Minot (1:38.21) set in 2013.

BOYS SOCCER: West Fargo posts another state championship

The two teams that finished 1 and 2 in the Eastern Dakota Conference boys soccer regular season standings – Fargo Davies and West Fargo High – were the two squads playing for a state championship on Saturday, October 13.

The Packers and Eagles played to ties in their two regular season meetings, but in the 2018 North Dakota High School Activities Association title match West Fargo came away with the 1-0 victory at Cushman Field.

West Fargo (15-3-2) and Fargo Davies were gridlocked in a scoreless match much of regulation until senior forward Daniel Collins scored a goal with 2 minutes, 32 seconds remaining in the second half. The championship is West Fargo’s third in five seasons.

BOYS TENNIS: Grand Forks Central wins team dual state championship

The Grand Forks Central boys tennis team completed a perfect season on Thursday, October 11.

The Knights defeated Bismarck Legacy 4-1 in the championship match of the 2018 NDHSAA boys tennis team dual state tournament at Choice Health & Fitness. The team dual title is Central’s seventh in program history and first since 1997.

In the individual portion of the state tournament, Bismarck Legacy’s Michael Janes won the 2018 NDHSAA singles state titles defeating Gary Wu of Grand Forks Central 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The 2018 NDHSAA individual doubles state title was won by the combo of Geoffrey Youngs and Max Olson of Fargo South who defeated Grand Forks Red River's Kaden Johnson and Jack Lindgren 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the title match.

CROSS COUNTRY: Runners closed in on Jamestown for four exciting races

The state’s cross country teams gathered on October 27 at the Parkhurst Recreation Area in Jamestown for the state meet.

Edgeley/Kulm senior Isaac Huber won the Class B boys individual championship. New Town won the Class B boys team championship.

Bismarck High sophomore Sean Korsmo won the Class A boys individual state championship. Williston won its first Class A boys cross country team state title since 2004.

Jamestown sophomore Meghan Ford took first in Class A girls. Fargo Davies won the Class A girls team state championship.

Hillsboro/Central Valley won the Class B girls cross country team state title. Leading the Burros was junior Reagan Baesler, who won her third straight individual state championship.

CLASS A GIRLS GOLF: Bismarck Century wins team title led by Hannah Herbel

The Patriots finished with a two-day team total of 661 strokes – 18 better than runner up Minot on Tuesday, October 2 at the Jamestown Country Club.

Leading the way for the Patriots were eighth-grade twin sisters Hannah and Leah Herbel. Hannah Herbel won individual medalist honors shooting a two-day total of 154 – 10 strokes over par for the tournament edging runner up Maggie Manson of West Fargo Sheyenne by four shots.

STUDENT CONGRESS: Fargo North wins team state championship

Fargo North scored 146 points to win the NDHSAA Student Congress team competition. It marked the fifth time North had won a state student congress championship (1973, 1974, 1975 and 1978 (Fall)).

CLASS B PLAYS: Stanley Blue Jays pick up first place

The Stanley Blue Jays one-act play “Bang Bang You’re Dead” took first place in the Class B Plays State Competition held November 19-20 at Jamestown High School and the University of Jamestown.
