RAY, N.D. – Perfection was achieved on a pitching mound Tuesday, April 16 in Ray, N.D.

Ray senior pitcher Trevor Hayes tossed a five-inning perfect game to help the Jays to a 13-0 win over Stanley in Region 7 play.

Hayes retired all 15 batters in order and of the 15 putouts, 10 were strikeouts. The 6-foot right-hander said his fastball was working well and as the game got closer to completion he was aware he had a good chance to wrap it up.

“I knew about it (the perfect game bid),” Hayes said. “I had good teammates backing me up and the catcher did a good job on not letting any of the balls get by him.”

Ray head coach Ben Schafer admitted he didn’t realize the magnitude of Hayes’ performance until the team meeting in between games of the doubleheader.

“It was pretty dominant,” Schafer said. “To be honest it went so fast I didn’t realize until after the game that they didn’t have a base runner. There was one play to third where the throw to first was a little wide, but we got the tag and there were a couple strike 3s that went in the dirt where we had to throw to first base. ... Trevor gets the ball and goes. Nobody gets bored when he is on the mound.”

Hayes received plenty of run support early in the game as Ray scored seven runs in the first inning. That allowed Hayes to settle in.

“The runs helped me get more locked in and I knew I had a better chance to be perfect in five innings than in a full seven inning game,” said Hayes, who also played basketball for Ray.

Ray plated four more runs in the third inning leaving the door open for Hayes to complete the pitching gem.
