East-West Softball Invitational to take place in Casselton this weekend

CASSELTON, N.D. – Kost Field and Farmers Union Insurance Field in Casselton will be the epicenter of North Dakota high school softball action this weekend.

Twelve softball programs will be competing in the inaugural Squirrel Softball East-West Invitational scheduled for Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.

Teams in action are: Central Cass, Des Lacs-Burlington, Bishop Ryan, Thompson, Velva, Northern Cass, Watford City, Kindred-Richland, Heart River, Hillsboro/Central Valley, May-Port-CG and Hankinson-RFCTL.

“All of the teams we have coming in are very competitive,” Central Cass head softball coach Scott Kost said. “There are going to be some really good matchups.”

The event helps bridge the gap of geography allowing teams to get a look at different programs across the state, something that typically has only happened at the state tournament in previous years.

Kost Field and Farmers Union Insurance Field both feature turfed playing surfaces and have lights. Kost Field opened last spring and Farmers Union Insurance Field opened in the fall of 2018.

“As coaches we’ve talked about organizing something like this for years,” Kost said. “Bismarck was brought up a couple years ago, but it never played out. Obviously, there is a fair amount of travel involved, but with the turfed facilities we have here in Casselton it finally worked out were we could get some teams to commit. Our starting point was to get the eight teams that qualified for state last year and we worked from there.”

The Invitational kicks off a rematch of last year’s NDHSAA Class B state championship game with defending state champions Central Cass playing Des Lacs-Burlington at 2 p.m. on Friday at Kost Field.
